​Disco originated in Philadelphia and New York City in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Although disco's popularity declined in the 1970s, it continued to influence the music scene, evolving into Chicago house, Detroit techno, and New York rooftop dance pop in the 1980s. It also paved the way for old-school hip-hop, post-punk, and nu-disco.​
